Mickey is 1 week home now from GFNC. This morning he had worms in his stool. No diarrhea, just these flat white worms. Called the vet, described what I saw and they say probably tapeworm. Picked up a med and treated him this am.

Anyone out there had to deal with this? How long does it take to clear up? Anything to watch for?

This is pretty common, they get them from eating fleas that are carrying the eggs. It may clear up with the first treatment or it may take a second treatment. Just watch the poo and see if anymore show up.

If You're not already, be sure to keep him on a good flea and tick preventative such as Frontline or Reveloution and Heartguard also.
If You have other pets You'll want to have them on it too. If there are fleas in the house there are some good products out there that You can use to treat the inside. Good luck and happy greyhounding !!!

Not much to worry about. A lot of track dogs have worms, and the vet may not catch it with a fecal, depends on the timing.
They are usually gone after one treatment and you won't see any more in a couple days. Just keep other pets away from him for a few days and you should be good to go.

We have had tape worms off and on with my dogs. It just goes with the territory. Mine seems to get them after having a few fleas. They can not catch them from each other or from eating the poop, becuase the ones in the poop are the ends which have broken off.
I have had very good luck worming for tapes with minced raw pumpkin seeds. I found the remedy in Dr Pitcairns book.
You get them at Home economist. Mince them finely with a knife and give 1/8th of a teaspoon. tape worms hate fiber he says so I always follow with some pumpkin or bran thrown in to their food for the next day or so to be sure I have scrubbed them out. I might also give a second dose of the pumpkin seeds 4-5 days after the first one. It is a very safe treatment and lots cheaper than the 30 bucks of Droncit!!

Also, I dont use flea prevention all the time. It can cause kidney and liver damage. But if you have fleas it can be your friend and you need it.
Greyhounds dont seem very susceptable to fleas because they are such sissys about going out, I think.
We get fleas every so often, and I treat with Advantage, then wait to see if any more come. Why pour chemicals into them if they dont need it?
There are lots of natural treatments for fleas, I'm sure folks here have used. We have a few more months before we need to worry about that again.

A group of us were discussing fleas recently. We were talking about ways to prevent/treat without using the chemicals all the time. We had a renter behind us with an outdoor dog last summer and we had no choice but to treat the dogs and the yard. We did the yard before we went to BeachBoundHounds so the chemicals had time to go away.

Since them I have been reading a lot about diatomaceous earth and Nematodes. Nematodes will eat flea larvae but won't hurt people or animals. I am going to give those a try. I am already using the diaomaceous earth in the attic and under the house for buggly-wugglies.
