Just a possible word of warning. I took Escort and Jessie up to the Midway ball field yesterday afternoon, Wednesday. The dogs had a great run in the sun. About an hour after Jessie ate her dinner, she started getting sick. She threw up quite a few times and lost all of her food which is something she doesn't do. This morning she got sick after her breakfast and then several times again throughout the day while we were at work. After several discussions with Dr. Artman we ended up having to take her to the vet for blood work, fluids, and anti-nausea shots. We left her for a couple of hours and we just brought her back home. She is on meds for a few days now and rice for a diet. After analyzing bloodwork they think she ate something that is making her sick. My real concern is that she got into something at the ball field. Since we don't have a fence she is always on a lead with us when she needs to go out or when we walk. I was watching them the entire time except when "bagging up" poop. The grass is really long so no telling what could be there. We are not positive that its due to something at the field but that is the only place I didn't have my eye on her at all times. I ran with them a bit and checked the gates but didn't walk the entire field. One of the things on her blood work should have been 1000, 1800 is very dangerous and hers was 1760.
I walk the dogs in uptown Kannapolis almost every day and often stop at the field so the dogs can play and I know many others let the dogs run there also.
I just wanted to warn everyone that they may want to take a walk through the field before they let the dogs loose on Sunday morning.
Jessie is only 28 pounds (Boston Terrier/Miniature Schnauzer mix) so I guess it hit her pretty quick. We are just lucky that Escort didn't get into it also.
Gary, if there is anything else I need to do please let me know or if several of us need to go up and do a walk through the field we will. Dr. Artman said with the length of grass we probably wouldn't be able to find anything.

Update! Jessie is finally feeling better. It has been a pretty scary week for us with her. Thanks to Dr. Jenny Artman for being such a wonderful vet.
Escort is happpy again now that he and Jes are back to running around the house after each other.

Did you ever find out what it was?

Glad to hear she is doing better & sounds like on the road to recovery! Laughing

No we never were able to find out exactly what it was, just something that was poisonous to her. I felt so bad for our poor baby. Her stomach was so upset that you could actually hear it rumbling across the room and that went on for several days.
We got Jes when I turned 40 and she is the first pet I have had in my life. I never understood before why people worried so much about their pets.
I know I've said this before but we are so thankful for our vet. She was really on top of things. She called everyday to check on Jes, even on the weekend. Dr. Artman is always so patient with all of my questions. She makes me think that Jessie and Escort are her favorite dogs! Very Happy

It's nice when you can find a Vet that is that caring and concerned!

My three hounds used that field the day before Jes got sick with no ill effects. We've had a playgroup since then with no ill effects from anyones dogs. I completely walked that field for two hours the day after Your original posting and found nothing but some dog poop that someone else missed or just didn't pick up. It's possible that whatever Jes contracted came from elsewhere. I hope that she is feeling much better now.

Gary
