Geez, if it isn't one thing it is another. My poor Nubie went through eye cancer a year and a half ago, now here we have another bizarre diagnosis. We've been diagnosed with LP, and possibly cancer, again. He has 2 spots, one on his neck and 1 above his rib cage, we can't confirm they are cancer unless with have a radiograph, or a biopsy, but the University Vet Hospital here (UGA) wants to do his LP surgery at the same time. Scott and I are beside ourselves about the cancer. This makes grey number 2 in our lives with bone cancer. We are not willing to put through Nubie (11 1/2) through LP surgery if he has cancer. Has anyone had their grey diagnosed with LP? Have they had surgery? WE've currently got Nubes on Metacam for the pain, but know without the surgery his larnyx will eventually paralyze. heavy sigh

Give Nubie a hug!!! And hugs to you and Scott too.

There are several members on the forum whose greyhound has been diagnosed with LP. Once they check in I am sure they will have good info for you.

Amy
If you join Circle of Greys and put in LP in the search you should find quite a few postings to see what has been said and done.

I'm sure you've been researching, but here's one link for the others here that explains the problem:

And here's a yahoo list group for LP:

This site has a wealth of information plus one of the links will show you vets who do the surgery.

Tessie is 12+ and she was just dx with LP. I have put her in a harness, keeping her calm and I don't let her run with the others or get too excited. Tessie had a bad spell at the vet and he thought she would need surgery right away but she did calm down after she got home. I am going to avoid the vet's, if possible. She is not very active anyway and is weak in her back end so being lazy works for her. Right now we are going to treat with the above. Other than surgery there are not many options. Someone did pm me the other day about using a bit of oxygen when needed. They used a small human mask and rented the small tank of oxygen from her vet. She would hold the mask down to the dog's nose for just a short time when coming in from outside. This seemed to help. I am planning on checking this option out if Tessie gets worse or if the summer heat gets to her.

Thanks for all the postings you guys, It's nice to hear another greyhound owner say they just want to make their grey comfortable. I like the idea for the oxygen mask in the summer, hopefully we'll get that far.

I'm sorry to hear this. My boy, Keno, had LP. I lost him a year ago at age 13. I completely understand your reluctance to put him through the tie back surgery at his age and with the possibility of other health problems. Keno also had autoimmune problems by the time his LP was diagnosed and I elected not to put him through the surgery. I had to limit his exercise and excitement as the LP progressed. It is especially important to avoid getting over heated as you probably already know.

There is a Yahoo message forum about LP, but in my opinion they are very pro-surgery and can be critical if you post choose not to pursue it. Not every dog is a good candidate for the tie back surgery. You have to do what you feel is best for your individual dog.

group hug

I'm sorry to hear this, Linda. It's so hard to see them get old.

The oxygen sounds like a really good idea. I wish I had thought of that for Keno.

Hugs to you and sweet Tessie. group hug
