I recently realized that Chip and Dingo are in bad need of getting their teeth cleaned. Chip had a very bad experience with anesthesia in the past (seizures... almost died) and I remembered that Karen had her dog's teeth cleaned by Kathy from Houndstooth back in September with great results. I talked to Kathy this morning and she will be at Pawtique in Ballantyne April 11 & 12. You can call Pawtique to make an appointment: 704-544-7551. If Kathy gets a lot of dogs signed up, she will add more days Smile.

Also, pawtique is an awsome pet nutrition store

My Waldo and GreenBean are at the vet today for their dentals.
He usually does them awake, but they both have to have teeth extracted this time. I am always a nervous wreck until I have my babies back home and they are safe.
Waldo is only 7, but his teeth are horrible, he needs at least 2 dentals a year.
GreenBean is 11 and doesn't have many teeth left, but she still eats her dry kibble and never misses a meal.

It depends on how bad they are.
Once a year if the teeth are in good shape and twice a year if they have a lot of build up, red gums around the teeth or swolen gums.

YIPPEE! I am so glad Kathy is coming back. She did a GREAT job on my dogs. Dolly has really bad teeth and needs another cleaning. She almost died from pre-anesthesia meds last spring so she can't have anesthesia again unless it is a life-threatening situation. The other two that Kathy did last year are still white and clean. I am going to have Sam's teeth cleaned this time too.

Christina, your VET does non-anesthetic dentals??? Wow! My vet said Kathy did an excellent job on my dogs but she won't consider trying it herself without anesthesia. Makes no sense to me. I guess they learn one way and are resistant to change.

Our paws are crossed for Waldo and Green Bean today.

Traci
"If" you can clean their teeth a couple of times a week, it puts off having to have their teeth cleaned so often. My dogs usually get their teeth done every other year. It can be very expensive-and a lot of that is because greys need special anesthesia, plus they charge for each extraction.
They have many different tasting toothpastes for the dogs and all kinds of brushes. I know a couple of volunteers who after getting their dogs to let them do brushing, will let them use kids automatic toothbrushes on them.
There are also different fluids you can put in their drinking water that are supposed to help kill bacteria on their teeth-Oxyfresh that is sold by the kennel is one of them or you can get some from most vets.

To add on to Blanche's suggestions:

In one of Cynthia Branigan's books, she suggested using a solution of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% baking soda and swapping it on their teeth.

When I mentioned this to Kathy, she told me the baking soda neutralizes the plaque. The hydrogen peroxide just cleanses. I've had this work wonders on dogs with some fairly "yucky" teeth and reddening gums.

For the bad teeth, I used it daily until they were good enough to use a maintance program. For better teeth, I use it weekly or every few days depending on how quickly the plaque tends to build up. Since hydrogen peroxide breaks down very soon after being exposed to light, I only mix 1 tsp to 1 tbs of each at a time.

Kathy does wonderful work!!!

A few years ago Tessie had terrible bleeding gums. Her mouth was very sore and she needed a dental. She has terrible teeth but at 12 she still has all her teeth. I started rubbing oxyfresh gel on her gums every night and in a week her gums were no longer bleeding and sore. Oxyfresh gel does wonders. I do not do dentals every year. Each dog is different and some need them every year and some do not. It depends on how much you brush, if you feed bones and use other products like oxyfresh.

Hi All. I spoke to Kathy Hobson from Houndstooth this morning and she asked me to pass this on. Kathy recently started requiring a $50 deposit per dog. Without a deposit many people who book an appointment may not show up. Kathy flies in from CA, so she needs to be sure she has an adequate number of clients to cover her expenses. She still plans to be at Pawtique on April 11&12 if she gets enough clients. Please share info about Kathy with all your doggie friends who might be interested in a non-anesthetic dental cleaning. Kathy will refund deposits for appointments if they are cancelled in advance but not for no-shows. Sounds fair to me.

To make an appointment for April 11 or 12 call Kathy at 310-835-1919. Her mailing address for the deposit is:
Houndstooth
1547 North Benning Blvd.
Wilmington, CA 90744

Thanks, Karen

GreenBean had 5 teeth pulled, and Waldo lost 15 !! Shocked
Poor Waldo, his face was a bit swollen this morning, but by lunch he started feeling better.
I am pretty broke now.
