i feed odie 5 cups of food a day (divided in 2 meals)... he is at least 85lbs. i feed him at 5:30am and 5:30pm but between those times, he acts so hungry. he gets treats 2 or 3 times daily but he still acts like he wants more. is there a way i could feed him more or divide his meals into 3 meals so it will hold him off a little longer?

First, the 5 cups seems right...I feed 4-5 cups to my 76lbs boy who is rather active. You could cut back on the food a little but fill it with some veggies, I put 1/2 a can of mixed veggies in at dinner and alternate with other things like tuna. Treats can be veggies too. Cash likes broccoli. Or you could take some of the 5 cups and put it in a Kong for him to work on while you're away. BTW...GH's are ALWAYS hungery! Laughing Rolling Eyes So don't let him fool you. You are giving him enough during meals even if you didn't give him treats.

Good job!

"Cash likes broccoli" Ewwwww- I don't even eat broccoli. Yuck.

The amount of food you are feeding Odie seems right to me. Maddie gets about 3-4 cups a day spread out between 2 meals and some wet dog food and then treats as well when I leave the house. Maddie is ALWAYS hungry. I could just have fed her and she will come and see what I am eating. I was just eating a banana of course Mads wanted some so I gave her a piece. She loves fruit. She has been known to eat my salad if it is left unattended (that counter surfer in her) Shocked

I love Broccoli !!! My Boy is 90 lbs and He gets 4 cups a day with treats in between. For their health they shouldn't be allowed to gain more than 3 to 5 lbs over their racing weight.

Just curious what kind of food you are feeding him.
My dogs get about 3 cups a day. 1 in the am and 2 in the pm.
I feed mine Canidae. If I was to feed them 5 cups a day they would be as fat as me !!
It could be that the food isnt satisfying them.

I feed My bunch Canidae, the girls get 3 cups a day and as I said before My boy gets 4 cups daily. I thought that 5 cups seemed to be a bit much but it could be the difference in the brand of food. And yes My hounds are always hungry but not overweight !!!

i just looked at the book "Adopting the Racing Greyhound" and on page 83 it says to start with feeding the females 4 cups a day and males 5 cups a day. maybe that's why i was thinking 5 cups....

SO, maybe i should be feeding him more since i am only feeding him 4 cups....

Carolina is eating Bil-Jac large breed (added joint stuff).

She eats 3 cups a day over 3 meals, and then treats (bil-jac liver treats and milkbones). She also gets some plain yogurt at breakfast, and some fish oil with dinner.

She's a happy 62 lbs, and a small little girl.

How's his weight? That is the best way to judge if the right amount if being fed. The first thing is a good food (right nutrients for the breed, age, and activity). You are already feeding a good food. Don't forget that different formulas, even in the same brand, can have different nutrient blends and calories. You are probably fine there. What is your goal - gain weight, lose weight, or maintain? Adjust accordingly. If you, wish, you might add an extra 1/4 to 1/2 cup to his meal. Watch his weight and see what happens.

Just remember that this breed is populated by a lot of little "pigs" - I mean food motivated pups. All of these dogs are individual and what is right for one may not be right for another. For example, My 70 lb female eats 4 cups daily plus treats; while, my 82 lb boy eats 5.5-6 cups per day plus. These amounts are adjusted slightly depending on their activity level and their weight. So you see, after reading the variety of feeding regiments, there is a wide range of what is right. Unfortunately, there is no set formula. It takes a little cautious experimentation to find wht is right for the individual dog.

When you are feeding a good food, no matter what kind it is, you should mainly go by the amount they recommend on the bag. If the dog is gaining weight with that amount, then reduce it, otherwise if they are maintaining their weight-that is the correct amount.
If you are adding treats or other food, then you should also reduce the amount to make up for the difference.

i was told to keep him between 83 to 85 pounds and he is 85 pounds right now so he is obviously getting enough... i may cut back a little. i have been breaking his treats in half so he doesn't get as many of them. i have taught him that once he used the bathroom outside, he gets a treat. he goes straight to the cabinet where i keep them and waits once he comes into the house.

my major concern was that he acted hungry ALL the time but he is obviously getting plenty since his weight is at the top of his limit.

thanks everyone!!!

Traci
I don't think there is a greyhound alive that doesn't act like they are always hungry-unless it is sick.
Odie definitely doesn't need to be any bigger, so it won't hurt to cut him down.
I buy weight management food for Sport. They can get the same amount, but it just has less calories.
