Today was the day that I took Tara over to Lawndale Animal Hospital for my consult with Dr. Crawford. He was very thorough with her and after pressing hard into her shoulder bone she yelped a bit. He told me that her muscle was in atrophy due to inactivity over the last four weeks. At that time he said it wasn't a good sign and that we should do a shoulder xray...off Tara went with the Dr. and I just sat there in the exam room and bawled my fool head off.

A few minutes later he returned with the news a Greyhound lover never wants to here...bone cancer.

We looked at the x-rays together and he showed me a the healthy bone and the un-healthy bone. The affected area is not large so, we think she'll react positiively to pain meds. I've also elected to start Artesimin at 100mg per day.

My baby is dying...

Today, when I got home, I started her on Tramadol and Deramaxx and I can tell she is feeling better. I know that it won't last and only want to make her short time here with me as peaceful and loving as possible. I am taking lots of pictures and if any one cares to look at them please go here:

I've been her Daddy for almost eight years now...and all I can say is that Greyhounds are the most incredible breed of dog I have ever met.

My heart goes out to you. I was in your shoes in June '07.

Prayers for you and Tara Sue.

Unfortunately, the most painful thing I learned was that it would have been better to have let Jilli go a day or more early than wait one day/hour too long.

We're so sorry to hear that Lawndale confirmed the sad, bad diagnosis. Several of our greyhounds have had this terrible disease so we certainly have a sense of how you are feeling. We'll be sending comforting thoughts your way and praying that Tara Sue will continue to enjoy every bit of her life!

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Best wishes that Tara remains pain free for as long as possible.

I am so sorry to read this news. Give Tara Sue a big hug from all of us. As hard as it is right now remember that she is with you NOW so spend all the time you can with her and love her. Now is the time she gets to do everything she wants and eat what she wants for she is alive and happy to be with you.

And as another poster said, when the time is here let Tara Sue go so the pain is gone. We want them to stay with us forever but they can't. I kept my kitty here with me and even though she wasn't in pain she wasn't happy. But it took an extra week for me to let her go and I was selfish not to have done it sooner. This is the best thing we can do for them is letting them go when it is time.

Hugs to you both.

With our first greyhound, Hawk, we waited a few days too long. That last night he was in a lot of pain. The oral meds were not working any longer so I took him in and had a pain patch put on. It made him anxious and he paced all night. I knew then that the next day was the day I would let him go. The first thing Woody told me when finding out about Beecher is that we will not wait too long like we did with Hawk. Thankfully, Beecher doesn't seem to be in any pain yet. We are changing him to Deramexx from Rimadly so he is having to do without his pain meds for 72 hours to flush his system. I have the Tramadol on hand but he has not needed it. His tumor is growing. Hawk lived 2 months after he started limping. We are hopeful that Beecher will live longer since he doesn't seem to be hurting yet. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. My thoughts are with you.

All,
Thank you for the kind words. Everyday since I found out has been a struggle for me. I try not let her see that Daddy is sad so she'll stay strong as long as possible.

She's been so sweet lately...and I can tell she is responding to the 1/2 tablet of deramaxx and the tramadol. Prior, she wouldn't even get up when I would walk through the door...now she whines (like she use to) and wags her tail like crazy...it's good to see her up and it makes me feel better. I even got her to come upstairs with me so that she could be near by overnight.

I am also going to start her on Artemisinin and see if that helps

I wish there were some way to suck the cancer out of them and make them healthy all over again.

I got the shipping confirm from Holley Pharama yesterday and the Artemisinin should be in by Friday. I plan on starting her on it when it arrives.

She has been doing quite well since on her pain meds. I noticed last night that when we walked she was not limping at all (or very little). She actually got into her play stance this morning and wanted to run zoomies around the yard.

I've been thinking about bringing her to playgroup but, I am not sure if that is a good idea. It would be good for me to see her out with the other hounds and she always likes going for car rides too.

She probably won't play much in all honesty...she never did when we went before...she was always content to hang out with the humans or wander around.

I would not take her to playgroup. There is a danger of her breaking that leg.
