I am a new greyhound owner, and I am finding that my new baby does not see well at night. Is night vision a common problem amoung greyhounds?? Maybe I am being over sesitive, but she can not see the stairs on the deck at night, or the trash cans in the backyard. Any insight? (no pun intended)

I have read that a greyhound has blurry vision close up (few feet) but can see clearly for great distances. I have no idea if that is true or not.

We have a blind greyhound, Smokey. His issue is PRA-Progressive Retinol Atrophy. With PRA the first thing they lose is their night (or low light) vision. From there it progresses to total blindness. PRA is not common in a greyhound because a blind greyhound can't run very fast. (Which Smokey proves everytime he tries the Hound Dash at the kennel. Bless his heart.)

The diagnosis for PRA is usually made by a ophthalmoscopic examination which requires dilating the dogs eye. With Smokey we got him at age 7 so I don't know if he was every diagnosed by an eye vet. But he has several siblings with PRA too.

I would suggest having your vet take a look at her to see what is up.

my digger had issues with his sight twice, he went totoally blind both times and by a miricale got it back. his was caused by what the doctor found to be blood pressure so hi he shouldnt have been alive. it caused his retnias to detach and this happend twice. night vision was his worst. thats how we discovered there was something wrong, he couldnt see the stairs to go to bed. the dr's all said it wasnt all that common but does happen. it amazes me digger got through all that and then cancer took him from me in the end.
my dash has one eye the dialates slower than the other and the biggest time he has trouble is when coming in out of the sun, the dr's determined that he must have been born that way and just to watch him over time.
mom had a grey who had some eye problems as well, from what i have heard its not uncommon for sight hounds to have some problems.
its never being over sensitive to ask about this stuff, i have often thought i was but they are my kids (doubt i'll ever have real ones) so they get the best care i can give.

I am not sure if Shalea is on this message board. Her greyhound Gryphon has trouble seeing at night. I'll ask her to take a peek on this board and hopefully she'll be able to help.
