I don't have a greyhound....yet! I've been to two M & G's, but I first became interested in adopting a grey when I first moved to Charlotte (1998).
In that same year, I received the greatest gift of all.....my dear sweet Jack Benny, (Rat Terrier), named after one of Loretta Lynn's sons, (not the comedian), who was named by my brother....my dog, that is! Haha! Anyway, me and my sweetie are planning to go up to visit the kennel this Saturday. Jack Benny is going as well....lord help us all!
Twisted Evil
I need advice, guidance, assistance...you name it! I've read the Cynthia B. book and just about everything else on the web. Any and all is appreciated!

Gabrielle

Just follow your heart, you will easily find a new friend to love.

Read through all the goofy things our dogs have done on this forum and be ready for a new adventure each day.
There are plenty of dogs who will be happy to have a little friend waiting for someone to pick them and take them home.
Have fun!
Keep us posted.

Welcome Gabrielle! When we got our first greyhound just a short 4.5 years ago we took our two dogs with us.

We had an Irish Wolfhound mix who was sick with Lymphoma and our Maggie-Mae who is a lab-terrier-something-something. We had picked give greyhounds from the website. Like most people I wanted a young dog and I wanted a female. Of those five only two were cat safe. I can't remember why we ruled out dog number 4 but dog number 5 was just to rambuncious for my Maggie-Mae. Gizmo didn't care but Maggie was scared and hid behind me.

The kennel volunteer (bless him) tried to talk me into a male since I had two females. But no I wanted a young Female. (Excuse my prejudice but it was my first greyhound and I didn't know about seniors and males.) So they showed us a shy female. She tried to interact with Maggie and Maggie hid again so she wondered off on her own. After a little bit Maggie ventured out after her and they were soon following each other around.

So we adopted Aggie, 18 mos old, now known as Jasmine and her and Maggie-Mae are best buds! They were the same age and had the same activity level.

Since Jasmine we have adopted five more all males and all seniors. Trust your Jack Benny to help pick the dog he wants to be buds with.

Keep us posted!

Hi Gabrielle!

I talked to you via email and at the Matthews PetSmart. Please keep up updated on your trip to the kennel and let us know if you have any questions. We're here to help in anyway and an early welcome to our Greyhound Family! Smile

We had fun visiting the kennel this Saturday. We were shown 3 dogs. Auburn, Jacey and DJ(I think). None of them seemed to mind Jack Benny and he didn't have any issues with them. It was so hot! We walked Jacey....and I miss her so much already! Now I have mixed emotions... is that normal? I feel so GUILTY about all of the other dogs! I'm scared, nervous and anxious....we put Jacey on hold. Oh, lord! I hope she is okay. I wonder if she liked us? She was so cute! She totally freaked out over a grasshopper!

Hi, Welcome and congrats.. Yippie.... You will absolutely liove your grey when you get her home. Don't worry all your emotions are normal. I have several and each time I bring home a new one I have the same nervousness. God knows I want to take them all but I can't. Keep us posted. We are here for you if you have any questions.

Congratulations!! I had to check out Jacey's picture on the website, very pretty girl! Very Happy
Don't feel guilty about the other dogs, they'll find their homes, too!
I've adopted a few dogs myself and fostered many, and I am still getting nervous about every new dog coming to my house! I wonder if they get along with my crew, if they will be happy, if they find a good home etc etc. But then everything works out just fine. Wink

When are you picking her up?

Hi, I am Linda and I talked to you on Saturday at the University M&G. Scared, nervous and anxious are all very normal. Remember, you have a big support group here in Charlotte as well as the kennel. I had to go check out Jacey, she is beautiful. These dogs have so much love to give, I know you will enjoy Jacey. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Linda

I remember when i first went to the kennel to adopt Pandy. Jacey was one of the three I picked to meet. She is a sweet girl. I still check the website to see if she has been adopted. Don't worry about being scared and nervous. I was too. Good luck. I'm sure whichever grey you end up with will be the right one

Yep- I think I went through all of those when I went to the kennel. The first dog I went to look at was already under adoption, the second I knew I was not able to take as it was Brodie and he as just a puppy and he needed an experienced owner (which was not me) the last one was Dobioe (aka Maddie) and she just came off the hauler that morning, will never forget it, her back legs were shaking and she was eating grass- poor thing was scared- (she was also not a barker in the kennel but I have since learned that she does bark and is a great barker!!! )but so loving, there was a young girl there at the fence and she went up to the girl to get petted. So she was good with kids, which was good as we have plenty of kids in the neighborhood and iI knew that if I was walkign a dog that people and their kids may stop and want to pet her. SO I had to weigh that factor in as well. I picked her right there after watchjing her and interacting with her and walking and playing with her. Donna Marie (my adoption counselor) wanted to know if I wanted to see any more dogs and I stated no as the choice would be too hard for me and my heart was telling me Dobie was the one. Go with what seems right with your home situation, (cats and your other dog), your heart etc. Jacey is a great dog and all the others wil find homes too. The dogs that you see at the kennel you still check to see who adopts them. Keep us updated

Congratulations!! If you haven't bought a crate yet I have one you might be interested in. It's a wire crate so it's easy to folddown and take with you. The size is XL. It's basically brand new. I bought it when I adopted Trooper but it didn't work out for him. I would have returned it but i lost the receipt. It's free if you want it. If your interested either reply to this post or send me a private message.

one thing i have learned is greys are wonderful creatures, they are very loving and careing. they all have simalar yet very different personaltys. they have the unique abillity to win your heart over with one look. they have a very different look in there eyes then other animals i have been around and once you see it its hard to turn away. its hard for me sometimes to go out to the kennel cause i want to take them all home. its hard to leave one and take another. but in the end the reward they give you with love and affection is well worth it. good luck on your new friend. always remember no matter which one you pick, you've made a "greyt"choice. Very Happy
