It is my understanding that a greyhound should never be put on a retractable leash. Not only did our adoption group emphasize to NEVER use one on a greyhound....so did The Retired Racing Greyhound for Dummies...the book by Lee Livingood.
Any comments??
Sandy

I efuse to use a retractable leash PERIOD. Even if it is for another breed. IT hurt my palms and hands. My friend Brian has one and when I used to watch his 80+# black lab mix Eddie my hands and palms would get all cut up when I would take Eddie out for his walks. I told him not to bring it and just bring the regular leash. The retractrachable made feel like I had no control over Eddie who is a big puller. When I used the regular leash he stopped pulling and I had the control. So no I do not use a retractractable leash.

Maddie got one in a basket that she got for Christmas last year, I politely gave it back to my brother andsister in law and explained why I did not want it or need it with Maddie and they understood and use it for their dog Miller.

Retractable leashes can be very dangerous. The thin line can cut through the skin when tangled around a leg. Of if you drop the handle the dog gets spooked because he thinks the handle is chasing him, making all that noise!
I've heard from several owners that their greys raced down the street being chased by the handle!
I give retractable leashes a HUGE NO-NO!! Shame on you

When we brought our first greyhound home Woody insisted on walking Hawk with the retractable leash. We had only had the boy 2 days and we while walking him Woody dropped the leash. It scared poor Hawk and he started running. Everytime he would slow down and look over his shoulder he would see a stubborn old man and a leash handle chasing him. He finally got tangled up in the cord and Woody was able to catch up to him. And yes, I did say I told you so and Mr. Woody learned his lesson the hard way. No more RL in this house.

BIG NO NO !

I have a stock pile of them that have come here with returned dogs. My plan is to have a retractable leash bond fire one day.

They are easy to drop and like in the post before, the dog will run crazy trying to get away from it. Also, before I was educated on the leashes, I accidently grabed the cable with my hand and needless to say I had to go to the ER. If it will do that to my hand, just imagine if it gets around a greyhounds leg.

BIG NO VOTE FROM ME

i fully agree on the retractable leash being a big foul. if they dont lock or the animal sees someting then there they go and no control. i have been on my motorcycle many times and had dogs on those retracable leashes run out in front of me and nearly get hit. greys especially if they get spooked or see something its go time and with one of those you have no way of catching or keeping a hold on them. i think there best use is as a paper weight. they are bad.
