|
|
We have a great dynamic in our pack, no problems inside other than the occasional growl when someone gets stepped on. But the neighbors have a cat that they refuse to keep in the house and we have several bunnies who haven't yet figured out that our yard is not bunny friendly and unfortunately the peace does not extend outside.
Everybody is muzzled and supervised in the yard.
Today there was a small animal (I never did see what it was) in our yard and Bandit and Paradise both went after it and then turned on each other. Both were muzzled, neither of them have any injuries that I can find, but somehow Bandit has blood on him. The only thing I can figure out is that it came from the small animal, whatever it was but I can't figure out how they wounded it with muzzles on unless it was with their toenails or if they managed to bite through the muzzles. I can't find whatever it was now, it got away when I started screaming, so I hope it is ok.
So here is my question, should I let them outside separately? Iceman and Mia show no interest in the small animals, Iceman says he is too old to be chasing those whippersnappers, and Mia says she would rather stay by Mommy's side. So do I let Paradise and Bandit out separately?
We are going to look into some type of mesh to put along the bottom of the fence to hopefully keep the rabbits out but that will do nothing for the neighbor's cat.
I'm not sure what else to do, my heart is racing and I am worried about the animal that they caught, hoping it isn't injured too bad. _________________

I'm sorry you are dealing with this.
We have had unexplained blood at times like this and I think sometimes they bite their own gums when they are so revved up like that and that is how you end up with blood on someone and no wound to be found.
I don't think there is much you can do to keep small critters out of your yard and it's one of the hazards of having greyhounds. Most cats seem to have enough sense to stay out after a close call with the greys. But bunnies and squirrels? how can you inform all of them?
We have had problems with agression when our guys are chasing something along the fence then turn on each other just like your two did today and we ended up with muzzles. It's weird how they can be friends but when the adrenaline is flowing they turn into another dog.
I think that when you have a big enough pack, it's probably a viable option to let them out in groups and keep the two who are so keen and likely to "get into it" in separate groups. But, as you have found in the past, sometimes they just turn on whoever is closest and start chomping. However, the one who got "chomped" usually gives a wide berth to the "chomper" in the future. (Joy really keeps her distance from Cheewa in the yard now and he is muzzled all the time now too.)
I don't think there is a simple solution to this, ie; something that works one day will not work another day. I think you need to try different things and observe and see if one solution works better than another.
From a psychology standpoint maybe you could do some systematic desensitization, plaster the inside of their crates with pictures of bunnies and cats and show movies to them of bunnies and cats and maybe they will get tired of looking at small furry creatures and not care anymore???

Whatever it was..bet he won't be back in your dangerous yard! LOL
I only let mine out in the bigger area, muzzled and two at a time (my choice on the two!), except Star & Atta, they have to go alone. We have lots of squirrels and rabbits in the yard and my worse fear is that they will get one....
I think you would be more comfortable turning out Bandit & Paradise separate...that's twice and I'd be scared too! _________________ Cathy & Crew

Sorry, I had to laugh when I read this.
2 of mine were muzzled, and my old guy was not, (my stupid thinking that he was just running out for a pee), somehow Cricket got her muzzle off, and between Cricket and Nubie they caught a squirrel. Lindey had the good sense to keep her muzzle on! I got her in the house, but the squirrel had Nubies nose with Cricket hanging onto the tail and we ended up with Nubies nose ripped open, and Crickets pad torn up and 2 staples under her chin.
They've caught several squirrels, fortunately with their muzzles on so all they can do is pin them, then the squirrels get through the fence. We usually come back limping, and some blood from a torn pad.
I now go outside before my dogs, and scan for squirrels. Cricket and Nubie are obsessed with squirrels, Cricket will whine and run from window to window in the house after them It is a pain, but I am much more secure about it with their muzzles on.
Lindey and Nubie chased a cat 1 time through the yard, with me watching the whole time and not a darn thing I could do. Fortunately the cat vaulted over the fence after they had chased it around the whole perimeter (2 acres), cat never came back!!
Good luck! _________________ Lindey, Nubie, Cricket and huMom Amy |

We have had 3 cat inside the fence incidents in the past week?
and its 3 different cats too !!!
We have lived here almost 2 years and you'd think the cats know to stay away???
Luckily the cats made it over the fence in time, but I worry if he doesn't make it he is not going out without a fight and then we will have vet bills.
Yuck!
I am always scared they will have their eyes scratched. I am too lazy to go out and do a survey before I let them out. Dan says blow the air horn before you let them out. (that's a man solution, make lots of noise) _________________ Totty

When We just had Paige We didn't muzzle Her and She caught a cat in the back yard, She was getting ready to shake the crap out of it and fling it into the air when I got to Her and broke it up. The cat never came in the back yard again.
Two weeks ago My three trapped a squirrel between trees and just about mauled that little critter to death. They would have ripped him apart if they hadn't been muzzled.
