Smokey Montgomery (aka Smoker)

It is 'almost' official. Smokey will be vetted on Friday and then he will come to live with us. We have re-arranged furniture so he has lots of room and clear paths from room to room. For those that don't know, Smokey has PRA-progressive retinal atrophy and is blind. He is also a handsome 7 year old that is a sweetheart!

We took our gang out to meet him today. They all seemed happy with him. Even Miss Maggie-Mae was on her best behaviour.

He is a bit smaller than Leo.

After the visit Leo was happy and Jasmine was pooped. It is a lot of work meeting a new brother. All that sniffing just wore her out.

Toby stayed awake for the entire visit. And for those that know Toby, you know that is unusual. Laughing

WOO HOO Very Happy - Smoker (I mean Smokey) - you are going to be spoiled at the Montgomery house. Glad you got to meet your new brothers and sisters and see Mom and Dad again.

We must have just missed you all there today. Jan Norman (aka Zoey's mom), Mary and I were there from 1-2 walking and playing with the puppers. Smokey was a good boy and did not have any accidents, but as soon as we raised the trap door he went out and pottied (alot) Congrats.

Congratulations Rick & Lynda & Smoky

Love the pictures - he is such a handsome boy! His coloring is beautiful - silvery brindle with fawn mixed in. Maybe he's a new color - Silvery fawn brindle!!

We picked up Smokey this evening and brought him to the house.
Thank you to everyone who went over and walked him on his last day. You kept him company after the other dogs were gone. Tomorrow morning he goes to Poplar for vetting. So keep good thoughts for him.

He did well coming home. The front steps were a challenge and my heart was pounding when we got him up the 'two' steps into the house. He did well walking around the house. Then he settled down on his new shrimpy bed for a rest.

Mary M. works with someone who has a blind dog and he let us borrow a book on working with blind dogs. It had a very good section on scenting different areas of the home. His bed and his crate have Peace & Calming essential oils which he seems to like.

We took him out the back door and there are two steps off the deck there. Down is challenging but he did well. Coming up he walked right up. I think he will settle in quicker than us humans.

Great!!! I am so happy for Smokey!!! Very Happy
He'll learn his way around in no time, it is amazing how easily blind dogs adapt.
If he gets lost, always put him back to the same spot and let him navigate from there. It was easier with the dachshunds, tho, because I can pick them up and put them somewhere. Wink

Poplar just called. Smokey is out of surgery and is doing well!! We will pick him up at 5 tonight. Hooray Smokey!

The current plan is to take him with us to Mountain Hounds. As the event gets closer that may change.

He did well last night. Well until about 2am when the CAT Twisted Evil decided to give her nightly LOUD cat demented wail that she has been doing lately. Gerty is really loud when she wakes up and doesn't know where everyone is. Poor ol' girl. It woke Smokey up and he decided he wanted out of the crate.

We waited until he was quite and then went ahead and took him outside. Which was a good thing because he had a bit of diarrehea. Tonight he will probably sleep very well since he has been at the vet all day.

Picture of him and his new bed coming soon. He is just so cute!

Hooray for Smokey being ok at the vets today.
Very Happy
Poor guy having the big D. Probably due to all the recent change. I will need to remind myself to locate the red bandanna collar for you all to see if you can use.

I missed my daily time with them today during lunch
