|
|
Blue Moon is at the vets today.Last week she got about 1/12- 2" of her tail caught in the door of the van. After a trip to the vet, they said that
portion of her tail was broken. So they wrapped it tight and sent her
home with an antibiotic. We had to return today for a check-up.The vet
said she had a slight infection...and she was on the very best medicine
she could get for infections. He said the best thing to do was to amputate
that part of her tail.So she is at the vets now having that done. The vet said we could continue doing what we had been doing(giving her antibiotics) and having her bandage changed every week, but in the end the results would probable be the same...amputation.So we decided to go ahead and do it.
So a little prayer for Blue would be great, and it would sure make me feel a whole lot better!!
Thanks,

Don't worry, Sandy. I'm sure Blue Moon will recover quickly with all the white light around her. As you can guess, greyhounds are somewhat notorious for having their tails shut in doors. Now she is joining a special group of greyt 'hounds with shortened tails; she'll fit in just fine. We'll be sending love and light your way. _________________ Carol, huMom to greyhounds Lee, Sally Bizzy, and Glitzy; whippets Dodge, Mandy and Spice, and Itty Bitty Kitty. I'm sure she'll bounce back quickly!! I just went thru this w/my last foster She's fine now but needed 2 surgeries because they did not take it up far enough.... She originally ate the dead end of her tail while bandaged Then after her 1st surgery there was still dead tail & it became infected. She now has a 'dobie' tail & is perfectly fine!!!
Here's to a speedy recovery!!! _________________ Cyndi

Thanks everyone for the encouragement!
Blue came home, and seems to be doing
fine.However,she won't eat,and she won't
take her antibiotic.I even put peanut butter
on it,and she still won't take it.Anyone have
any suggestions?I know she would take it if
she would eat.Is this normal?

Hi! ProMan takes several pills a day and it's always a challenge to get them in him. No matter what I do to the pill, Pro won't eat it if he sees it. He will lick the goody off or take tiny nibbles around the pill. HA! Also, Pro wises up after a few days and we have to switch to a different method of pill delivery.
My favorite pill hider is individually wrapped processed cheese slices. Tear a slice into quarters and smoosh it around the pill. I also use sandwiches made with sliced bread and spreadable butter or margerine. Hide the pill inside a piece of sandwich. The butter keeps it from falling out. I've tried this with peanut butter but it doesn't work as well. Sometimes it sticks to the roof of Pro's mouth and he ejects the pill. My latest discovery is cold grits. They are firm and sticky enough to contain a pill.
Good Luck!

The only fool-proof way to administer a pill:
If you're right-handed, put your left thumb on one side of his upper jaw and index finger on the other side in front of the large molar. The palm of your hand will be over his snout. Gently slide your thumb and finger between his upper and lower teeth and lift up his upper jaw. Then with the pill between the thumb and finger of your right hand place the pill on the very back of his tongue and give it a tiny push with your index finger. Then close his mouth with his snout pointing up and gently rub under his chin and whisper endearments until he opens his mouth just enough to swallow and lick his nose. You may have to put your right hand into his mouth all the way up to your wrist!
This may sound harsh but if it is done quickly and gently it is the least stressful way for everyone. You do need to be sure the pill is waaay back in his mouth so he can't work it forward and spit it out. Your dog will try to wiggle and use his tongue to get your hand out of his mouth but only the rare dog will munch down on your fingers. They don't want to hurt you as much as you don't want to hurt them!
I've tried coating the pill with butter or peanut butter but then it sometimes sticks to the roof of their mouth. I've also tried hiding it in hot dogs, cheese and other stuff only to find the treat gone and the pill on the floor. And if they bite into one of those nasty bitter antibiotic capsules they really won't want to try again.
You could try practicing with very small pieces of hot dog, etc. to develop your technique. I'm sure you'll be an expert in no time!

Blue Moon seems to doing very well. She's not eating as well as she did,but
hopefully that will come around. At least she's eating some.
I like everyones' idea about taking her pill.I find it very easy to open her mouth and shove it way back.....works everytime. My vet said to try the peanut butter "trick"...rub the peanutbutter on the pill, stick it to the roof of her mouth and usually they lick it till the pill desolves!!

I have to give Maggie her CHEWABLE heartworm pill this way. The girl just doesn't want it. So I offer it to her and if she refuses I cut part of it in small pieces and start pushing it down. After about three small pieces she gives me the I give up look. And then she eats the heartworm pill.
The greyhounds on the other hand........chump and it is gone. _________________
