We are having a problem with our greyhound urinating frequently. We've had him for twelve days and he has been having accidents on a daily basis. We have been taking him out frequently and he still seems to be having a problem. He doesn't urinate in his crate and he can go all night without an accident. He seems to be drinking a lot of water too. Are we expecting too much too soon? Sometimes his accidents happen within an hour after taking him out. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would do is have him checked for UTI. We took in a senior and was told he was incontinent and every night he would wet his bed. After a urine check it was discovered he had a UTI. He was treated and his urine checked again and the UTI was still present so he went through another round of antibiotics. The UTI is gone and he is a much happier guy.

Another thing is to make sure he is completely eliminating outside and not just marking and saving some urine in case he needs to mark again. Before he is 'empty' he ends up back in the house with urine still 'in reserve'. Do you walk him or does he use fenced back yard?

We do walk him around in our yard during the day and when I get home I will walk him in the yard and then walk him up the street for some exercise but I do not let him do anything in any other spot and then when we come back down to the house I walk him around in the yard again before going back inside. We wondered about a UTI but he does ok in his crate for several hours and also in the bedroom all night out of the crate. He does seem to empty himself when he goes and then will do a little more in another spot before going in. I guess we are in for a trip to the vet real soon.
