My Sherry is at Lawndale having a biopsy done-Dr Crawford is pretty sure it is bone cancer. I don't know at this point what will be offered me in the way of treatment or not.
I would like to get others opinions that have gone through this-to amputate or not, treament, etc.
Sherry just turned 9 last month and has always been healthy.
Most stories I have heard about amputation are that most dogs live only 4-6 months after.
If you have had it done-please let me know the outcome and if you would do it again.
Thanks. _________________ Blanche E Fedor

Oh, no! Those words strike terror in all our hearts. I so hope this is not the case!
I've no personal experience with osteo, but I know there are members here who do, unfortunately. If you haven't already, you might want to go to the Grey Talk forum (there are thousands of greyhound owners on there) and do a search for bone cancer or osteosarcoma and get that input.
You and sweet Sherry will be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

Thanks Everyone for the thoughts and prayers.
I won't hear the results of the biopsy for 3 or 4 days, but am checking out anything I can find on bone cancer.
Seems most everything I have heard or read is that amputation only gives you 4-6 months and working at the kennel I have heard of a lot of bone cancers. I have only heard or 2 so far that the grey lived longer than 2 year. The ratio is quite lopsided. _________________ Blanche E Fedor

Blanche, I am so sorry to hear that...
My friend just called, his dog Suzy, a GFNC hound, has been diagnosed with osteo in her shoulder today... She is 9 1/2 years old. _________________ Christina

My Hawk was 9 1/2 when he died of osteo. It had already gone to his lungs and we choose to use pain meds and love as his treatment. He lasted 2 months. He did well on the meds and they did not upset his tummy. I am thankful that he never broke his leg before he left us. Hawk was a very tall greyhound and weighed in at 90 pounds with very long legs. He got up like a horse. I just could not see him doing well with 3 legs.
I am so sorry. Know that I am thinking of you and yours. _________________ Linda

I am sorry to hear this news for you.
It is heartbreaking for the whole greyhound community.
This is a very devisive issue with no right or wrong answer, and ultimately you need to chose what feels right for you and your dog.
We lost our Willy last Jan to osteo, we chose to use only pain meds to keep him comfortable as our vet ( who has over 30 ur experience) told us by the time it gets to the leg and you discover it it is likely already in another internal organ. We gaven him plenty of pain meds, anything he wanted to eat and took him all his favorite places as much as we could. He lasted 4 months and had a really good 2nd month when the pain seemed to go away for a while.
Good luck,
we are all here for you

Hey Blanche, I am so sorry. I have gone through, 2 kinds of bone cancer and a cancer of the eye. I will try to help but from my experience, the best thing you can do is keep them comfortable and pain free. Lots of love.
I do know that I will never have a biopsy again. That seemed to cause more pain than we were going through in the first place. (Bone cancer Biopsy) I did have the biopsy done for the eye cancer and then had the tumor removed alonge with the eye.
I guess it just depends on the type of cancer as to how you deal with it.
Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Blanche,
I am so sorry to hear about Sherry, Dr. Crawford was wonderful to us when we discovered JD had osteo. Because he had it on his spine, we had no choice except to love him and let him go peacefully. My prayers are with you, please keep us posted. What made you think there was problem? _________________ Lindey, Nubie, Cricket and huMom Amy |

Hi Amy
Sherry started limping 2 weeks ago Saturday. As most of us keep thinking (or hoping) they just pulled a muscle or stepped on something.
I took her in last Monday and Dr Crawford did an x-ray and it is in her upper leg bone. He also did a biopsy and I got the results on Thursday afternoon that it was bone cancer. I've flip-flopped about a dozen or more time-I will amputate-I won't amputate.
I gave Freebird a 9 month chance and guess I should give her a chance-you just never know. _________________ Blanche E Fedor

I want to thank everyone for their prayers, good thoughts and well wishes. I've read and heard many different stories of amputation and non-amputation. Do it-don't do it. I was always against it-until it happened to my grey and that is when you start asking should I or shouldn't I.
Right or wrong, I've made the decision to give Sherry a chance-she might just turn out to be one of those lucky ones and last more than 6 months. Either way, they go through pain which I will try to alleviate as long as I can, and when she lets me know, I'll let her go.
Sherry will go in Thursday morning to Lawndale. Dr. Crawford will x-ray her chest to make sure it hasn't spread to her lungs-no, I'm not gullible enough to think it can't be there yet in microscopic amounts-but if he doesn't see anything he will proceed with the amputation.
Please send a prayer or healing thought to her.
Thank you again. _________________ Blanche E Fedor

Sending lots of love and prayers and good wishes for sweet Sherry, and you, Blanche. I know this has been a very difficult decision for you to make. Let's keep the thinking positive! We want many more years with her.
