Anyone have any ideas about getting rid of a yeast infection that my dog, Jaty, has. It started in her ears. Then she scratched/rubbed her ears with her feet, so it got on them. Then she started licking them, so now it has traveled to her, I guess, lips? It's the area below the nose and all around her mouth -- looks rather peculiar as this area is now hairless and pink. It's spreading around the outside of her mouth now. Originally, the vet gave her antibiotics for her ear infection, but now that's gone. Cleaned up the ear infection, but we're left with this... Confused

Sounds like another vet trip is in order -- Jaty may need a different type of antibiotics, or a longer course of them.

This won't help for the yeast infection around lips definetely back to vet there.

But if it comes back to her ears here is a link for a natural treatment. This has worked well for several people I know, including me.

I don't know if your vet's already done a culture to make sure the infection is yeast (fungal), but if you're sure it is, antibiotics will not help. Antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections and will actually make a fungal infection worse by killing off the "good" bacteria in the gut that keeps yeasts and other fungi from getting out of control.

Traditional medical treatment for yeast infections is oral and/or topical antifungal medications. They (the oral meds) can be hard on the liver so your vet might suggest a liver function test first to make sure your dog's liver can break it down.

Yeast infections can be really hard to get rid of and often keep coming back if the beneficial bacteria in the intestines have been killed off. A probiotic supplement will help reestablish balance in the intestinal flora and increase resistence to yeast infections. There are several probiotic supplements especially for dogs that I've seen in vet supply catalogs like Fosters and Smith, Jeffers, Upco, etc. The brand that comes to my mind right off is Fastrack but there are others.

Good luck. Hope Jaty's feeling better soon. Smile

Oh, here are a couple of links about yeast infections in dogs:
