I picked up an afghan hound from the Harnett County animal shelter in Lillington today. Poor girl was in the drop box (metal cage ouside the gate in the sun/rain). Owner didn't claim her (or maybe was the one dropping her off??).
And since that shelter was partially shut down due to inspection failure they were really pressed for space.
In the 15 minutes I was there to pick her up, 12 (TWELVE!) dogs and puppies were droppd off, mostly red carolina country mutts and rottie/chow mutts.
Owners said "that darn bitch stays pregnant, she's got to go". Shelter employee said "Why is she not spayed then?" Owner said "I ain't gonna spend no money on that bitch, she's got to go".
Another guy said "He bit my child, I got to get rid of him. You do that for free here, right?"
A lady brought two puppies and said "my rottie is alway pregnant. I usually get rid of the puppies at the flea market, but I don't feel like it today, I need to get rid of them now".
I have found new respect for animal shelter employees and volunteers.
I would be in jail if I had to deal with this type of people.
So I named this girl Lilly, since I picked her up in Lillington.
I rode home with the windows down, she stinks to high heavens!!
She is so matted that I can't do anything with my cheap Walmart clippers. Since matts grow from the skin out, I have to scizzor her down first and then shave her to the skin. We had to pull her collar out of the matts to attach a leash.
On the way home she peed, pooped and puked in my van... fun, fun...
Poor girl...
Here is sweet little Lilly! :

OH wow. I think these people should be locked up for this.
I am so glad you have her.
I cant wait to see her in a few months after some good love and care.

I would keep her in a heartbeat if I had room, what a sweet dog!
She walked right into the bath tub and let me bathe her, no complaints. Gosh, I used up almost a whole bottle of shampoo. She still has a lot of caked poop and stuff on her that I need to cut off, but hopefully I got most of the terrible smell out, yuck!
After I picked her up from the shelter I thought I'd go to the $5 rabies clinic in town and get her vaccinated. I had to stand in line in the parking lot in the sun for over an hour, there had to be way over 100 dogs in line!
Most of them pit bulls (unneutered or pregnant!) or chow/shepherd mixes.
One pit jumped out of the pickup truck and tried to attack a smaller fluffy dog, but the owner was able to kick it away. Then the two pits in front of me in line got into a fight and sounded like they are going to kill each other. Good grief.
Then a vet, older than dirt, walked around holding a bunch of syringes in one hand and vaccinated all dogs in line with the other hand. How talented.
It looked like 5 pound chihuahuas got the same dose as 100 pound labs, oh well, it only cost 5 bucks.
I was glad when we were on our way home.
After the bath. She's getting a bit cuter already.

Christina,
I don't think anyone would disagree with me when I say you are a very special person! I am so glad there are people like you that will go to the aid of a dog at a moments notice, and take them into your home, even if it is just to foster until you can find a forever home for them. I know what you mean about working at the shelter or even a vets office. I'd probably end up in jail by the middle of one day. People are too stupid! If they didn't want puppies...they know what causes that now and something can be done to prevent it. Just think of what kind of home many of those unwanted puppies end up in.
Back to Lilly...I don't know how you knew she was an afghan when you first saw her???? She looks so pitiful. Do you know how old she is? What does Butter think of her?
It sounds like you are starting to get a houseful! I wish I could take more but I don't have the room. |

Bob, the afghan rescue and adoption person in Charlotte, offered to foster Lilly!
He has nine dogs and also fosters afghans. He sent her picture to his groomer to show her what to expect.
Bob is retired and has much more time for her. He usually has a waiting list of people wanting to adopt an afghan hound, so maybe he already has a good match lined up for her.
I met him halfway today and sent Lilly off to her new fosterhome. Gosh, amazing how attached I get in only a day!! I was sad to see her drive off, she hopped right in the frontseat of the truck and looked very pleased with herself. What a funny looking dog she is!
We have no idea how old she is, maybe the vet can figure it out.
Butter doesn't like too many dogs in her house, she tries to avoid them.
Bob will send a picture once she is shaved down, can't wait to see it! _________________ Christina

sounds like thats one hound headed for a happy ending. im so glad you were able to get her to someone to help and that you were able to help. it makes me extremly angry and breaks my heart to hear someone mistreat an animal of anykind like that. i think that big fluffy pup will always remember you for your kindness even though they cant actually tell you i really think they try in there own way.
are afgan hounds simalar to greys only with long fir?? _________________ Karl,

Poor Lilly looked like a sheepdog in those first pictures. I can't wait to see her transformation. |

I would not last a min. People in this world, I just do not understand. Some of them have hearts, and some do not. People like you, will certainly have a special place in heaven. You open you door and heart many many times. I am glad that Lilly has a good chance now for a special forever home. _________________ Dad to Babe at the Bridge, Bridgett, and Gracie |

Lilly looks gorgeous, even in such a state. Well done for rescuing her and finding her a new foster home. Fingers crossed her treatment for heartworms goes OK. She deserves a loving forever home and it sounds as though she's on the right road to find it now thanks to people like you HollySpringsHounds, you deserve a medal for what you've done. _________________ If you can see the floor, there's room for more! |

Guess we shouldn't be surprised that Lilly has heartworms. From the first picture ...it didn't look like her owner was much on health and care...let alone..love. We will keep Miss Lilly is our thoughts. At least now she has a person who cares about her. Let's hope she will get better soon and live a long and happy life with a forever family that loves her. |

Such a wonderful thing you did, rescuing Lilly! I was just looking through these old posts, and I'm wondering, do you have a follow-up? _________________ Karen
