I don't want to alarm anyone, but I wanted to share something with you that happend this past week. I have been feeding my dogs Nutro Natural Chicken/Rice (light green bag) to our Aussie and pound puppy. Tinker (the pound puppy) has been on it for 1-1/2 yrs. No problems (unitl recently). Galloway eats the Nutro Natural Senior (silver bag). He hasn't had any problems and has been on that for 2 or 3 yrs. Anyway, I bought a new bag of the Chicken/Rice for Noel (Aussie) and Tinker. Within a couple days, Noel had horrible diarrhea. I mean liquid. It was awful. Nothing else was new for her, treats or toys or anything else. I didn't suspect the Nutro, though, never had a problem with it. The awful diarrhea went on for 2 days, then I put her on a bland diet (cooked hamberger, rice and plain yougurt). Within 24 hrs the diarrhea stopped. She was on the bland diet for 3 days. Tinker started the diarrhea about 2 days after Noel. Same thing. 24 hrs after taking her off the Nutro, she was much improved. They are now eating Canidae and everything is fine. I will not feed them the Nutro again. I was talking to another dog friend of mine and she said that she had heard of some problems with Nutro (lately). I went out on the Internet and found a couple websites about it. You can type Nutro Dog Food into your search engine and find a bunch of stuff. I am finding out that Nutro has been bought out by another company and perhaps some formulas have changed. It's something to check out, anyway. Has anyone else experienced this?

I heard a couple months back when people were having trouble with no Nutro on the shelves at the pet stores the there was some kind of trouble some people were having with the food.
I called Nutro customer service and they said they were changing the bags and were having trouble with them, but they hadn't heard of anything wrong with the food. I was hesitant to start feeding Izzy the food, but had just gotten a bag of puppy food and decided to go ahead and feed it to her. I feed Sport and our mutt Nutro and haven't had any problems with it.
I was told today in Petco that Nutro was bought out by Mars. When Proctor and Gamble bought out Iams the food took a turn for not as good when they started putting it in grocery stores. Maybe that's what is happening to Nutro now-they may be changing the ingredients

I just looked up the Mars Company to see what brands they produce. They have the Nutro (2007), Pedigree, Royal Canin, Cesar, Whiskas and Sheea for pet foods. This is the company that makes M&M's - maybe they should stick with what they are good at - candy... just a thought....

I recently bought a new bag of Nutro (chicken/rice) and noticed that Teela's stools were soft and she's pooping more often. Until now, she has not been prone to diarrhea at all. I think I may switch to see if there's any change.

Something seems 'fishy'. The shelves at our localPetsmart are almost out of Nutro products. A sign says "backorder until June or something". Strange....

Nutro did have some recalls in April. Here is a link for the dog section of recalls. Looks like it was canned, Max, Ultra and Natural Choice. But it was not ALL bags/canned. The info for each one is listed below. It was a certain manufactoring run.

I heard they said they were having trouble getting lamb from Australia and chicken for their meats.

odie ate nutro before i got stormy with no problem. stormy had runny poop with nutro in the past so i kept him on canidae. that's what debbie was feeding him while she fostered him and she said that his stomach did well with it. i decided to transition odie to canidae too so that they would be eating the same food. it took me weeks to finally get odie to eat solely canidae but then he started gagging while eating and skipping meals. i decided to transition him back to nutro and as i added more and more nutro to the canidae, the problems stopped. he actually enjoys his meals now and i don't have to worry that he won't eat. he hasn't had any problems with it so far. each dog's stomach seems to be soooooo different. personally, i hope nothing is wrong with the nutro because i would hate to have to find another food for odie to eat.... AND i don't want anything to hurt him either.

I just got finished posting a complaint with the Consumer Affairs about Nutro. Fortunately for us, Cricket just started showing some funky signs, severe scratching all over, she can't take a step without scratching, She's the only one that gets Nutro lamb and rice, Lindey and Nubes get Iams, but we took her off the Nutro immediately. It's only been 3 days with no Nutro plus we're giving her Benadryl to help. This all came on with her as soon as we opened a new bag of Nutro. I'm not taking any chances. If you feed your pup Nutro, it is quite an eye opener to read all of these stories about the Nutro. Thanks for keep us posted!!

YIKES! I've been feeding Nutro chicken/rice for sensitive stomaches for over a year now and haven't had any problems. It's hard to know what is safe to feed when I keep reading about all these different brands having trouble. I have the last bag of Nutro that is almost gone and guess I'll look for something different to gradually change over to. Anyone have any suggestions ? All of my dogs are "seniors" but the senior food is too fattening.

In reading all the post about the different foods, I feed both Bridgett and Gracie, Science Diet ( Regular ). They eat it like they never had a meal. I have never seen any post about Science Diet. Are theri any pros or cons about it.

I switched Teela to Canidae and after three days I'm seeing a big improvement, which surprises me because I thought it would take longer. For a while, I had been considering making a switch but didn't because Nutro had been easier to find and was less expensive. Lately, I noticed the shelves were getting empty at both PetSmart and Petco. And the 40 pound bag I bought over the weekend only cost about $5 more than Nutro.

I did complain to Nutro and they contacted me yesterday asking that I send them a sample of the food. I told them I would, but regardless of what they found I am unlikely to swtich back.

What kind of Canadae are you feeding Teela now? Is it available at Petsmart and Petco?

Jean--I went to the Canidae web site and found a store over in Winston (well, it's actually in Davidson County down Hwy 150). In Greensboro, All Pets Considered on Battleground carries it--I think that may be close to you. But, no to Petco or PetSmart. Here's the store locator link -->

I purchased the lamb, which I was told has more protein than the chicken--and also costs slightly more. Until now, I have been feeding Teela the Nutro chicken but since she's getting a good amount of exercise every day, I decided to try the lamb. The last couple of nights, she's been very playful and hasn't spent all night snoozing on her bed in front of the TV.

Does anyone have thoughts on which is better for a very active 5 year old greyhound? Teela goes to a day care every day that has a great place for her and another greyhound to run and play. Of course, with warmer weather approaching, she won't be spending as much time outside....
