Well.. I received the dreaded email from Charter Kennels that my very first racing pup Dodge Meister flunked schooling...
He has zero interest in chasing the lure and just turns around and trots off in different directions looking for something to play with instead. That's just great...
The trainer hasn't seen anything this extreme in many years and tried his best, but it's not going to work. So, my pup will make his long trip from the Texas farm to the Victoryland track in Alabama this weekend where I will pick him up.
The pedigree (Dodgem by Design as sire and TNT Star Wars as dam-sire) is great, Charter Kennels trainers Troy and Ken Biehle in TX are well known and very successful, so we really don't understand what the heck is going on with this little rascal?
I clicked the "purchase" button on Charter's website the day Dodge Meister was born, Feb. 07, and was hoping for him to race with Charter Kennels at Wheeling, Southland, Victoryland or Derby Lane. Instead, he'll arrive at the track as a schooling drop-out to be picked up by his mommy... How embarrassing...
But since he is only 15 months old he'll make a good yard racing partner for 22 month old Diesel. My once colorful yard filled with flower beds and gold fish pond has been re-decorated with race tracks anyway, so what's a few more muddy paws, right?
I accepted a great offer on a replacement pup that is just starting to school, I will get the ownership papers soon.
This is the benefit of dealing with reputable racing folks like Charter Kennels, they won't let you and their dogs down.
No exciting schooling reports on the new pup yet, but hopefully she'll do much better than Dodge Meister and actually make it to a track.
Successful or not, the dogs that have my name on their registration papers will run in well respected kennels and retire on a couch.
Ah, the joys of greyhound ownership... After all, greyhound racing is a sport based on gambling and anything is to be expected.
Welcome to the family, little Dodge Meister! Diesel is waiting for you!
Dodge Meister is the big fat pup sitting on the left.

Christina, she can't do much worse. Maybe someone told her she had a wonderful home waiting for her. lol. I am sorry she didn't do better. Dodge is a cutie pie. I have a follow that hound pup on hold. She hasn't started training yet but that would be my luck I have my fingers crossed she make it to the track and races a couple of years but if not I will be ready for her. _________________ Linda

I had the same thought. Hoping for several years, but I am sort of ready if not. Well... so now hound #5 is moving in.. great...
Hope you have more luck! That brings you up to 5 hounds, too, right? What is your FTH pup's name? Is she with B&J kennels in Jacksonville FL? _________________ Christina

Hmmm, he does seem a bit pudgy.
Got to love those puppies!!! He looks to be a cutie. Now you must come to Mountain Hounds so we can all hold him and kiss him and get our fill of puppy breath. _________________

Dodge Meister was only 4 weeks old in that picture. They are so cute at that age.
This is the only other picture I have of him at 6-7 months, not much pudge left. Now he should be pretty tall at 15 months.
I've never met him, so we'll find out. I planned on visiting the farm in Texas and watch him school, but I guess that won't happen.
I get to watch him race around my yard instead.
Since he won't chase the lure, he should be pretty cat safe. My cat appreciates that.

Riley, she is a black pup with very little white on her. I am going to meet her in July. _________________ Linda

The trainer said that Dodge Meister's coat is all sleek and shiny black, not like most dogs that have a wooly farm coat when they get to the track. Does he think he is one of those fancy AKC greyhounds??
Well, yea, he gets a good home, but I was really hoping for him to go to the track and at least break even moneywise. I lost a lot of money on this little guy. Oh well...
Now the pressure is on the new girl to make up for his slack.
I already told Diesel about his new little brother, his ears perked up and he went to the house door looking for him, that was cute.
Linda, hope you are going to meet Riley at a track this July and not at your door steps! _________________ Christina

That's funny!!
They told me that they put him in a starting box, and he just stood there and didn't come out. Duh...
And they told me that he actually IS a bit pudgy, a whopping 80 pounds of pudge!
Can't wait to see that big puppy tomorrow! _________________ Christina
