I have an irresponsible IDIOT that lives next door to Me who lets His unvetted cats run all over the neighborhood. This morning one of them was in My back yard when I let the dogs out for their morning potty break.
This has happened before but they usually get away before the dogs get them. This morning was different in that it didn't get away and is now among the deceased. The problem is that now I have three hounds that had to go to the E-vet and will be going to our regular vet in the morning.
Blue has a punture wound in her foot that bled all over the house which now looks like a crime scene, Paige has a few small punture wounds on her front legs and is limping, Pride has a few little wounds and is limping badly. This will cost a bundle and I know where I'd like to shove the vet bill !!!!!
Watch Your hounds close, thing happen in a hurry.
BTW: They were all wearing their muzzles.

I have had three rabbits killed by my greys but no cats. I'm sorry for the cat, but if his owner wasn't responsible enough to keep it in his own yard....it would only have been a matter of time before something killed it. I'd send the vet bill to the neighbor. Your dogs were in their own yard and muzzled...it was his fault that his cat was killed. Hope your dogs aren't too seriously injured. I know that trip to the E-vet adds up fast and to have to take 3 in...must have been outragous.
I really think your neighbor should at least offer to pay the expense of having your dogs go to emergency for treatment.

I totally agree. It is an owners responsibility to make sure that his or her animals are kept safe and are not a nuisance to others, especailly your neighbor. Bridgett tore one of her upper pads off and I was not sure what to do about it. I just wanted to be safe and take care of her. I took her to the EVET when I got home form work and it was a 222.00 bill for a bandage. I also had blook everywhere. SOME PEOPLE _________________ Dad to Babe at the Bridge, Bridgett, and Gracie |

I took the hounds to the vet this morning. Blues foot had a bad punture but no broken blood vessels, Pride and Paige are still limping but not as bad so things are looking better now. They are all taking Clavamox which is an antibiotic. The dead cat has been properly placed on the neighbors front porch so they can step on it when they open the door in the morning.

don't get me started on wandering neighborhood cats. we have had two over $300 and over $200 dollar vet bills from tangles with roaming neighborhood cats. I called animal control on my backdoor neighbor and they gave then the "VISIT" All it did was enrage my neighbor and we came home one day to him chopping all our trees and bushes whose limbs hung over our fence. He then cursed my husband. The other neighbor paid our vet bill but was not sympathetic that his cat could have been killed. The worst that happened to the cats was missing fur. One of my babys was emotionally scarred and was afraid to go under the trees in the yard for a year and a half not to mention a terrible infection in his leg that made it swell two times its normal sizel. When I start seeing cats in my yard now I trap them and call animal control. |

Trapping them is probably your best recourse. Turning them into animal control forces the owner to pay a fine to get them back if they want them, not to mention the inconvenience. To date I have trapped 14 cats by setting the trap on my property. All of these cats belonged to my neighbor and all of them were wild. Some people just don't care.
My hounds are all fine now and I just hope this doesn't happen again.

Does anyone know any place that will loan humane animal traps? I would love to catch the neighbors' cats that wander into our yard, stalk and kill the birds, establish themselves in our foundation plantings, and even "anoint" the front door mat that says, "Must love dogs"! _________________ Carol, huMom to greyhounds Lee, Sally and Bizzy, whippets Dodge, Mandy and Spice, and Itty Bitty Kitty. My first greyhound killed a neighbor's cat. I was terribly upset and dreaded telling the neighbor. His response was so strange to me. While acknowledging that it wasn't Frosty's fault (afterall, the cat was in my fenced backyard) he said the cat was his youngest son's favorite and slept with him every night. I suggested as kindly as possible under the circumstances that beloved pet cats should be indoors for their own safety. His response was that it would be cruel to keep a cat indoors all the time!!! Like the fact that this cat was now dead and his son was going to have to grieve over this senseless death wasn't cruel!?!?
That was 12 years ago. This same neighbor now has two more cats, and of course, they still roam the neighborhood at will. They use other people's yards as their personal litter box, kill birds that come to neighborhood feeders, and create a general nuisance for everyone.
Recently I heard through the neighborhood grapevine that one was missing and they suspected that one my dogs had killed it!!!! Before I could confront them, the cat turned up -- it had gotten accidently shut up in another neighbor's garage for several days.
I just don't understand people .... rant over. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

Cynthia,
I don't think it's cruel to keep cats indoors all day. Now that we, as humans, have made them domestic pets, we are responsible to keep them safe and they are safer indoors. In the "wild"....they are always in danger of being killed by another animal, car, or whatever. I also don't believe your neighbor is smart enough to own a pet as he obviously doesn't realize cats don't stay in their "own yard" and are always getting into trouble. Also...there are a lot of people that actually hate cats and do cruel and inhumane things to them. I've had cats before and I know they enjoy playing outside, but it is safer to keep them indoors. If that cat was so loved..it shouldn't have been out running loose in the neighborhood. You don't allow your beloved dogs to run loose because you know that they need to be kept safe and in control.
It was not your dogs fault as it was doing what it had been trained to do and even if it hadn't been a greyhound, most dogs would have killed a cat that came into it's yard,( unless it had been raised with cats.)
Your neighbor was the idiot who had to tell the son that because of his neglect, the cat had died.
Rand over! |

Carol if you're having a problem with cats in your yard call Animal Control and they will bring you a live trap to use. When you trap the problem animal call them again and they will come and get it.
Sandy had two cats when we got married and I'm not a cat person but these were really sweet cats and their entire life was spent inside which they didn't mind at all, they didn't want any parts of being outside. They died four months apart from one another, Katie was 17 and Chelsea was 16. Now it's Greyhounds forever !!!!!

Thanks, Gary. I'll give them a call. We don't want to start a fight in the neighborhood, but we don't want to have to cope with the consequences of a cat in the wrong place at the wrong time , either.
BTW, we have a cat, but she lives indoors. She's one of several cats we've had in our family, all indoor ones, so we're not cat-haters. _________________ Carol, huMom to greyhounds Lee, Sally and Bizzy, whippets Dodge, Mandy and Spice, and Itty Bitty Kitty.
