Hi All,

Our family is new to the world of greyhounds. We adopted Gracie two weeks ago, yesterday. She is fitting in as if she's been here for two years...literally. I do have a question, though. I have noticed Gracie is sometimes very cumbersome when she tries to stand up after lying on her bed for a while. It seems down right awkward for her at times. She's just been to our vet and her health is great, so I have no reason to believe it's a medical issue. Is this something any of you have experienced with your dogs?

Thanks for the input.

How old is Gracie? We have this issue with Toby but he is 10 and when he was 2 he ran into a sliding glass door so I am sure that injury is his issue. The vet records show he was in the hospital for 2 weeks recovering.

Is her bed on a wood floor or carpet? When mine have their hind legs slide off the bed onto the wood floor they have trouble getting the legs back beneath them. Hard to get a grip on the slippery floor. Also if the bed is too thin she may be feeling the floor more than cushy bed. These are just some things that I have noticed with mine.

Did your vet mention giving her fish oil? That is good for the joints and their coat.

Thanks for the reply. Gracie actually has two wool beds, one in the first floor family room and the other on the second floor in our bedroom. The one down stairs is on hardwoods, but we have a rug at her bed. The other is on carpet so I'm not sure if that's the issue.

I'll just keep a watch on the situation. She runs outside and goes up and down the stairs just fine, so it's probably not a big deal. And like I said, it's not all the time.

Thanks again

I forgot to answer your first question. Gracie is 2 1/2.

Thanks again!

So glad to hear that Gracie is doing so well! It could be that her legs have fallen asleep if it only happens after she's being laying down a while. That sometimes happens with Bullet after he's had a long siesta! Keep us posted!

First thing that came to mind was Ehrlichia:

One of the symptoms is stiffness in joints.
But she seems to be moving ok otherwise... Think
The new heartworm tests also test for Ehrlichia, was hers negative?

Do you know why she retired? Could be a pinched nerve or dropped muscle?

How quickly does she jump up when she hears the cookie jar open?? Razz

Just a few random thoughts. Hope she is doing well!

BTW, here is another great website:

I think it may be more of a "struggle with the bed" the more I think about it. She gets up very quickly when she thinks a treat of some sort is involved. The wool beds tend to "sink in" and i think she just can't get a good footing to stabilize. I'll keep watch on it to make sure.

Thanks again, for everyone's reply.
