the Vet!!

Gerty went to the vet today. cat safe She hasn't been in awhile because it is very traumatic for her (and me). She will be 20 Old on July 1st so we decided we needed blood work. So off we go.

First her carrier is hiding somewhere so I wrapped her in a towel. Gerty doesn't like car rides. In the lobby she was quiet as can be. Maybe shock had set in. Her weight is 6lbs. Only down 2lbs from four years ago, so not bad.

Then it was time for blood work Evil or Very Mad Big bad evil vet tech Twisted Evil had another big bad evil vet tech roll her over and hold her down. Gerty may be old but she is fiesty. It took three of us to hold her still and they 'hopefully' got enough blood for her all her old kitty tests.
Daddy Rick just laughed the whole time.

With one traumatic invasive thing behind us they decided to forgo the fecal and temperature. Probably a good move. Amazingly the only food she will touch is Friskies canned and her teeth were in good shape. Some tarter but not bad.

Dr Hutmaker said she felt enlargement at her thyroid so he probably has hypothyroidism. Blood work will be back in one or two days so we will know then.

But the indignities did not stop there. Once she was home safe in her home she was subjected by four noses violating her. My poor baby girl.

Lynda,

You did so well with Gerty at the vet... I'll pay you to take my 13 year old Miss Kitty to the vet for me. The last few times she has gone all they have been able to do is give her a rabies shot. She is an absolute terror!
Actually, I usually bribe/con/threaten Mason and make him take her.
Just reading your post makes me dread the thoughts of going soon. Ugh!

I had one of those old evil kitties once. The vet told me to put Jasmine in a pillow case and bring her in that way. She hated the vet so much she would growl like a dog when the vet would say hello, even when she was in her pillow case. Surprised) Surprised) She was 20 when she passed.

When they look at Gerty she hisses and turns away from them. It is rather funny.

Her blood work came back and she is heathly with the exception of thyroid, which was expected. She has hypothyroidism and has to take medication.

The fun part??? In 3 weeks she has to go back for blood work to see if the meds needs adjusted. Gerty hasn't been to the vet in four years and they want her to come back in 3 weeks. She is REALLY going to hate us.

It was good to hear that the rest of the numbers were good. We figure we will get at least another 10 years with her.

Mary - I wisely decline your offer. Wink Your own your own with Miss Kitty.

Hey Lynda:
Just read about your trip to the vet with Gerty. My 15 yr old, K.C. has hyperthyroidism. They started her on Tapazole - I get a good price through

They charge $29.90 for 100 tablets. And it's the brand, not the generic (Methimazole). At first, I checked out Eckerds. They were crazy expensive. Then another online company wanted something like $85.00.

Isn't it fun to pill your cat! I've been bitten a couple times - she's just trying to get rid of the pill.... so I started breaking the pill into pieces and stuffing it in canned cat food. It is supposively a very bitter pill, so as long as she doesn't bite down on a piece of it, she eats it right up with the food.

At first, I had to pill her twice a day, now we are down to a maintenance level of once a day and that suits me just fine. LOL.....

Thanks for the info on pricing Jean! I had originally posted it was hypo but it is hyperthyroidism which is common in older kitties. At first she was taking her pill in her food very easy. We give her a half pill twice a day. Then I had to start stuffing it in her mouth which she HATES. Little bit of catfood w/ pill, pry open mouth and VERY QUICKLY slide it onto back of tongue. Boy she is fiesty for 20 yrs!
