In a previous post I stated that Gracie had recieved the dental vaccine (3 weeks ago now) and that she had no problems with it.
However, this Friday Gracie had her teeth cleaned and recieved the 2nd vaccination.
Usually she does OK with anesthesia since my vet uses Propofol. But this time she wasn't her usual zippy self.
By the following afternoon she still wasn't herself and she had a lump on the side of her ribcage. By 10pm that night she really didn't look right and I took her to the Evet.
She had a fever of 103.4 but labwork showed no infection.
She was given an injection of Dexamethasone for pain (since the lump was extremely tender) and antibiotics.
The lump was completely gone by Sunday afternoon as was the pain. She was so restless Saturday night that I think the fever broke in the wee hours of Saturday night.
After talking with my vet today he confirmed that the lump was at the injection site. He'd had one other dog have a reaction and he has now reported both cases to Pfizer.
We'll never know if Gracie's vaccine reaction was prompted by anesthesia, or if she also had an anesthesia recovery reaction to the vaccine.
Like I said, she had no problems with the first injection.
My suggestion would be if you get the vaccine don't get it during a time of stress such as during anesthesia.
Gracie is her usual self today
