Beau has had repeated bouts of diarrhea since I adopted him in May. I tried everything suggested here but still no luck. Last month, one of the Charlotte playgroup members (Hal- thanks!) brought me a sample of beet pulp to try. He swears by it. Well, let me tell you-it's a miracle!! Beau now eats 1/4 cup mixed in his food twice a day and everything has been "perfect". I talked to my vet at Carolinas Animal Hospital (he has a greyhound) to get his okay about using it. He felt that the additional fiber in the dog's diet helps with regularity much the same as it does in ours; in smaller amounts most dog food manufactures add it to their products anyway. Beet pulp is a natural fiber which is fed to horses and other livestock along with their regular feed to help with a variety of conditions including diarrhea. Since it comes in huge 40 lb bags, I decided to repackage it in more manageable monthly portions and see if others in the greyhound community might benefit from it. I'll be starting an eBay auction on 1/8/06 (do a search for beet pulp or dog diarrhea) with a portion of the proceeds going to GFNC. Feel free to contact me for more information.

Sounds like a winner. I have heard of it but did not know where to get it.
How does it come and how do you store it?
I would definatley buy some to have on hand.
Thanks for offering it to the rest of us.

I've packaged it in brown paper lunch type bags. That works out to be about a week's worth of treatment. If demand is high enough I'll probably offer other sizes too, especially for those who feed it daily like I do. Storage is no problem-beet pulp doesn't attract any pests or rodents-I keep mine in the pantry.

I'll be checking your auction. Sounds like a good thing to have on hand as long as there were no underlying problems causing the diarrhea.
Thanks for sharing.

Beet pulp is an ingredient in Iam's dog food. I found confirmation on the Iam's website. It is also routinely used as a source of dietary fiber in horses and cattle, so I guess that's why it comes in such big bags.

Here's a link to an article by a canine nutritionist and breeder of Great Danes re: beet pulp that I thought was interesting:
