ProMan had a pretty serious bout of diarrhea yesterday. Of course everything bad happens when the regular vet is closed. I gave Pro a few doses of Pepto and he is fine today. For future reference.... Can dogs take Imodium? I think so but am not sure. Does anyone know?

Yes, they can. At least our vet in another state prescribed Imodium when appropriate. Have to decide whether emptying gut is important or not, based on cause/presumed cause of the diarrhea, and also the duration of symptoms.That's my 2 cents.

Yep they can take Immodium per our vet at Atrium. Rice and chicken work well too to settle their tummies as they are bland. Per the Montgomery clan to get his stool to firm up again use canned pumpkin. It works I swear.

We were just at Atrium for a sprain and they want Maddie(wild child or goofy) to rest. (like that is going to happen with her)She hit her foot or"wrist" when I came home on Thursday and I have been monitoring her limping since then from my bed (as I was sick this weekend). Good times at the vet. Glad to hear Pro Man is better.

BTW, I did notice on this page in bold print never give Immodium to collies, for those of you who may have one in your pack.

The fiber in pumpkin can help firm a loose stool and amazingly enough can also help with constipation as well. A bland diet is generally recommended after fasting to cleanse the gut.

Beau has had repeated bouts of diarrhea since I adopted him in May. I tried everything suggested here but still no luck. Last month, one of the Charlotte playgroup members (Hal- thanks!) brought me a sample of beet pulp to try. He swears by it. Well, let me tell you-it's a miracle!! Beau now eats 1/4 cup mixed in his food twice a day and everything has been "perfect". I talked to my vet at Carolinas Animal Hospital (he has a greyhound) to get his okay about using it. He felt that additional fiber in the dog's diet helps with regularity much the same as it does in ours; in smaller amounts most dog food manufactures add it to their products anyway. Beet pulp is a natural fiber which is fed to horses and other livestock along with their regular feed to help with a variety of conditions including diarrhea. Since it comes in huge 40 lb bags I decided to repackage it in more manageable monthly portions and see if others in the greyhound community might benefit from it. I'll be starting an eBay auction on 1/8/06 with a portion of the proceeds going to GFNC. Feel free to contact me for more information.
