I want everyone who owns a greyhound to always ask the staff at the Carolina Speciality Vets afterhours clinic if they are experienced with Greys. We had to take our 6yo female there on Christmas eve when I noticed a large area of bruising on her thorax. After waiting for 5 hours we were told that she had a dangerous low platelet level and probably had cancer. Merry Christmas.
I couldnt wait until 12/26 to take her to our vet Dr Anne Mitchell who informed us that greys normally run a low platelet level in comparasion to other breeds. After a complete exam including xrays Dr Mitchell concluded it was just a bruise.
I am not a vet, but I Googled greyhound platelet count and it poped up thet one shouldnt be too alarmed if platelet ct is 88,000(Jenna's was 148,000). I have filed a complaint with the co owners of the clinic but have had no response.
My message is beware and ask up front about experience. |

Is it the one in Cary on Tryon Rd? I am not too fond of them either!
In my opinion, a better 24 hour clinic would be Quail Corners vet on Millbrook Rd in Raleigh.

I am glad your doggie is OK.
I had a bad experience at the Matthews E-vet here in Charlotte.
Their wonderful new policy is to assess your dog, then present you with a treatment plan estimate for care, then ask for your credit card to get a bunch of the money up front before they do much for your hound.
It was a horrible experience on the most horrible day of my life when Storm died and I have been wanting to ask if anyone has had a better experience at a different e-vet here in charlotte? Because I hope I never have to use them again. _________________ Totty

I can't speak for the night crew at Carolina Vet Spec. but the day crew was very knowledgable when we took Paige there for x-rays and ultrasounds after a cancerous growth was removed from Her butt by our regular vet. Our experiance was very good.

Wow, that's scarey! We have been to all the E-Vets in the area at one time or another...I'm not real fond of Animal Medical Hospital or the Matthews Emergency Clinic, I had the same experience as Totty with these two>"pay up front, then we will treat"!
We had a greyt experince at the Carolina Vet Specialty Clinic (Off Hwy 49) when Heffie had his hip injury several years ago. We saw the Orthopaedic Vet (Dr. Daye), but he is no longer there. He had to have major surgery, artificial ligaments (bolts & screws) in his hip. He ripped his femur head out of the socket and the ligaments were destroyed so it would not stay in place. The Vet actually gave us all the options we had and let us choose. He even called us at home to check on Hef after he was released.
I'll be sure to have extra copies of the Dr. Stack information printed to take with me if I ever have to visit E-Vet again!!
This is my poor Heffie..

We had a couple of medical "Sticky Notes" attached to this section before the big "end of year clearance" . We should put those back up.
They're very handy to print out and have on hand for emergencies. At large facilities and emergency facilities you never know who's going to see your greyhound and whether or not they're aware of some of the physical differences to other breeds, differences in anesthesia protocols, etc.
I've always armed myself with all the medical knowledge I can and question everything. Yes, it's made me unpopular with some medical professionals (animal AND human), but I believe in educating myself and then advocating for my dogs and myself. Medical professionals have to earn my trust and respect. Just graduating from medical school doesn't cut it with me.
Lynda, do you still have those links? If not I'll get them to you so you can put them up again. The Dr. Stack link was one of those -- that whole site of hers is excellent. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

Just an FYI --the Carolina Emerg. Vet on S. Tryon Street actually has a greyhound on staff as their blood donor. I know this b/c we had to take the Bulletdog in for (what turned out to be) a severe urinary tract infection and they commented on how he looks just like the one on staff. We did have to fill out paperwork ahead of time, and they gave us an estimate of services so we could accept or decline, but did not have to pay until we actually left. Our experience was overall positive. _________________ Bonnie (wife to Mike)

This is where I took Keno at 1:45am on Monday. They brought a gurney and got him out of my car and rushed him back immediately to open his airway (he had laryngeal paralysis) while I was completing the admission paperwork. I feel they did everything humanly possible for him and treated us both with kindness and compassion. All costs and options were discussed with me. Based on this experience I would use them again for an emergency. I didn't see her, but was told by one of the techs that they do have a brindle greyhound who is their resident blood donor. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

If this is the Emergency Vet next to Contential boarding this is were I took my Rider when he had his collapsed larnx attacks. There is a E-Vet that works at night Dr. Todd Smith, that is very fimilar with greys - he used to own one and worked with several previous to coming to CVS. He was very wonderful and would keep me posted with the condition of my beloved boy. There is also is/was a male tech that worked at a clinic down in florida that was across from the track and he had worked with several greys also. We I brought my boy in the 2 times the staff there was very compasionate to my needs especially when it was time for Rider to go over the rainbow. _________________ Desta
