Hi! Our greyhound Lucky (5 yrs old) started limping (my husband said she stepped off a curb funny and starting crying). We took her to the vet and he said nothing appeared to be broken and he thought it might actually be an issue with her back (maybe a disk). He gave her pain pills and said we should keep her crated 23 out of 24 hours. I admit that we haven't done the crate thing but we have tried to limit her activity and she doesn't seem to be improving. We are going to limit her activity even more this week but are thinking we will have to go back to the vet. Has anyone else had similar issues? I saw the post about a chiropracter. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Hi Kim! I remember you and lucky. It's good to hear from you, but I hate to hear Lucky's limping .
How long has this been? Had she been to play group or anything like that in the days before it happened? Since you've not seen improvement with the medication (an anti-inflammatory?) you may want to let him know it's not improved and see what he suggests -- he will probably want to do some X rays. That should confirm or rule out a disc problem.
I've used Dr. Watkins at Commonwealth for years and really like him. He's done several chiropractic adjustments on Keno over the years that have been very helpful, but just like my personal chiropractor, he did X rays first.
I think Atrium in Charlotte also has a chiropractor. Several folks on here in Charlotte use them and can verify that and give directions if you're interested.
Good Luck. Let us know how it turns out, Kim. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

Hi,
We took Lucky back to the vet because her limping was not getting better. They did an x-ray and see something that may indicate a disc issue BUT they also see a "spot" and are recommending we have a biopsy done. Can anyone tell me their experiences with cancer and their hounds. If it is bone cancer can they do anything for her? We got this news while out of town and so haven't spoken at length with the vet yet - we will do this today.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks Holly. We are having the biopsy done tomorrow morning and will get the results in about 5 days. My hubby and I were talking about her this evening and we feel like she has really gone "down hill" over the last 3 weeks. I don't know if it is just being in pain (despite being on a pain med, an anti-inflammatory and a steroid) or if it is because something more is going on. Needless to say we are worried. Thanks for your prayers!

Unfortunately, there are some of us here who've had first hand experience with bone cancer and can share that with you if needed. It's an aggressive and particularly painful cancer. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I send her all the positive, healing thoughts I can and wishes for a clean biopsy. And hugs to you as well. I know how worried you must be.
Please keep us posted, Kim! _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo

Lucky had her biopsy this afternoon and will be staying overnight at the vet's office. I spoke with the vet about an hour ago and things don't look good. He said she has about a quarter inch area in the bone that is very fragile. When he punched it for the biopsy the punch went right through the bone so he had to do another punch. He ended up doing 3 punches all together. He obviously can't say for sure that it is osteo until the biopsy comes back but he feels pretty sure that is what it is. He was hoping it was a bone abscess but when he punched it no pus came out. So we are feeling rather depressed right now and can't wait to get Lucky home tomorrow. I'll let you know the biopsy results when we get them. If it really is osteo I'll appreciate any suggestions you all have. I'm still praying things will be okay .......
Thanks for being there!

Oh, Kim I'm praying along with you. I don't know how long the biopsy will take, but when you get her home pain management will be crucial as bone pain is intense. I know sometimes the vet will shave an area on the back of the neck and apply a pain patch if oral medication doesn't seem to be enough.
Stay in touch. We'll give you all the support we can. _________________ Cynthia, huMom to Carly (Cw Your Charming), Princess (Lofty Princess), & Cruz, the galgo
