Hello Everyone! I was just wondering what brands your hounds like? We've been to several petsmarts and they've suggested Bil-Jac and Beneful, but what do you guys use? _________________ We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults. There many good choices, and it can be overwhelming. However, I would never recommend Beneful for any dog. None of the dog food comparisons have ranked it anywhere close to satisfactory. It has alot of fillers (empty calories) and additives. If you go to the website and look at the ingredient listings, you'll find that most formulas list the first ingredients as grains. Many of the formulas don't even mention anything meat related. The few which list something resembling meat at all list "meat by-product meal". Most people don't want to know what the by-products are.
If you live near a Costco, their signature Kirkland brand kibble, manufactured by Diamond, is amazingly good, especially considering that it's only $19-$20 per 40lb bag. It is wheat and corn free - 2 grains that some dogs don't digest well. I haven't researched it, but I've heard that Sam's Club's Members Mark lamb and rice food is similar.
In addition to Bil-Jac, you might consider Eagle Pack, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, Nutro, Pro Plan, and Newman's Own (many wheat and corn free). These are some of the more commonly used foods among greyhound owners. Also, many owners have found lamb and rice or chicken and rice formulas work well.
Sorry that there's no simple answer.... What to fed is an ongoing conversation/debate in the greyhound world. _________________ Elizabeth

costco is not the only place to get dog food...
check at a tractor supply, petsmart, or a local feed store...
i found that nutro (a great dog food that you can buy from petsmart or tractor supply) was actually more expensive than CANIDAE dog food. canidae is a great dog food! _________________ Traci

Basically, look at different foods that do not contain corn, wheat, soy, grain fractions, fillers or by-products... do some different price comparisons. like i said, nutro cost more than canidae in my area. it may not be that way in your neck of the woods. _________________ Traci

I did not say that it's the only place to buy dog food. I said it is the only place you can buy their Kirkland brand which is an incredible food, especially for $19 for 40 lbs. Example: I was feeding Eagle Pack Holistic Select lamb at $42-$48 per 33lb bag and had fed Nutro for years at $32-$39 per 40 lb bag. Kirkland lamb is almost identical to the Eagle Pack (and IMHO better than the Nutro formulas) plus wheat and corn free at $19 for 40 lbs. Hm-m-m _________________ Elizabeth

My dogs have been on the Members Mark Exceed Lamb and Rice from Sam's Club for several years and seem to do well on it. They just raised to price to $23 for 44 lbs. Sometimes I buy Purina One Lamb and Rice if I have a coupon. It was about $26 for 40 lbs, but I think the price also went up on this one. _________________ Christina

Hi, this is Debbie, please let me know if you want to get Canidae with us. We get a wonderful discount as a group.
Its the best food out there in my opinion. No additives or fillers and considered a human grade food.
canidae.com
Just let me know if you want to try it. _________________ Debbie |

Thanks you guys! I think I'll probably go with either with Bil-Jac, Kirklands, or one of the brands I can get cheaply and locally first. In a couple months when we've gotten our bearings though, I'd like to start ordering the Canidae. _________________ We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults.
