My new foster Chance has SLO... An autoimmune condition that causes the toe nails to split and fall out.
I never had a foster with this condition, I always heard about it but didn't pay much attention to it. I found an old post on this list with very helpful links. Sounds like it won't be a quick fix.
Chance is such a handsome boy. Guess everyone, dogs and people alike, come with their baggage.

We have a grey that had been on treatments for 8 months. She just came off of her "cocktail" and is showing a few signs that it is not in remission, but not enough to start her back on the medicine. It is, in fact, a VERY lengthy process, but Lenie was a completly different dog after starting the medicine. The medicines are fairly inexpensive, about $25-30 a month, but it is the amount of times a day the medicine needs to be administered that is the biggest burden. Feel free to e-mail me @ Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | and I will give you my number if you would like to talk more about it. Our grey was the first our vet treated, but has since become very familiar with SLO.

My grey Milo also has SLO- has been on the tetracycline and niacinamide
for about 2 1/2 mo now with improvement seen- unfortunately he had
already lost all his nails except for 1 dewclaw. What is growing back is
ok but we re keeping our fingers crossed that something more drastic does not have to be done. Good luck and let me know of I can help.

Hi Christina,
My Rohna has SLO and we've been on the medication for about a month now. She's lost several nails and I keep socks on her most of the time when I'm not home to watch her. I've had contact with someone who has gone through this with one of her greys and with input from her vet my vet has been learning along the way. I've heard of more cases in the last month they seem to be increasing. I've got her on allergy dog food and treats also. We hope to find out if its an allergy she has developed by elimiating things from her diet. In the other case I mentioned it was found to be a wheat allergy and can be kept under controll with a wheat free diet.
Well, let me know how things go and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Rohna will be able to be half way together by Mountain Hounds. Nothing like going from the fastest grey there last year to one with this problem. _________________ Bonnie Searles

Thanks everyone! I've been reading lots of info online and joined the SLO dog yahoo group. I am amazed how many dogs have SLO, not only greyhounds but all breeds and mixes.
I will print out some info for the vet to read. Until then I am trying to keep my floors from getting bloody. I bought doggie boots at Petsmart that were marked down, but they fall off, as expected. I think I have to bite the bullet and order Thera-Paws, they are very expensive but are supposed to stay on pretty well. _________________ Christina

We used Thera-Paws for Miles and his corns. They worked very well and we did not have a problem with them falling off. _________________ Lynda M

We have been selling Thera-paws for over a year now-since the lady came and talked about them a couple of open houses ago. _________________ Blanche E Fedor
